[56K Turbosmooths] Developer's Work-In-Progress Thread Redux
« on: February 12, 2011, 01:47:44 AM »
Holy shit.

I'm never browsing the forums at 4AM again.

I was going through the old Work in Progress thread from the beginning, and somewhere around page 58 I managed to delete the thing. Apparently SMF didn't care about asking - it was pretty sure I had made the right choice.

Oops.

Well, uh. Here's to a new thread, for a new (Chinese) New Year.

Gentlemen, we have a new fetish on our hands  :v:

FN P-9, WIP... gotta get those thumbs looking sexy.

e: and as Thomas pointed out, clipping with the mag!

This is where Milkshape animation is useful; really basic stuff.

Final version, it's ten times sexier.

e: it might look a bit different than the final right-handed version, i just mirrored pictures of it left handed.

Throwing some stuff in here BECAUSE

Top of the head is deliberately low poly, going to cover it with hair.  I've seen some videos, seems the best way to make hair is with planes (again)

THe mouth looks a bit odd, but perhaps that is adequate, anime mouths seem to usually defy all laws of nature.

Alex, this is going to go against what you should do, but I'd make the lips on the face as low profile as you can, and the ends of mouth as close to the line the fac would take if it had no mouth at all.
Also, remember before Ackart RUINED CHRISTMAS, Alex showed off a CAR15 skin?
That is this with more toadie.

EDIT- Also a Clean version

I like where that's going mate, though I'm not sure why it gets darker to one side (was that something I did?)

The first image looks great with the dirt and suchlike, the second image looks good too - just match the opacity of the "Commando" text to the surrounding stamps, also the T-bar looks like it needs some fixes (both UV and pre painted shadows)

I probably have got the mouth style totally wrong, but I really hate pencil thin mouthlines so I took a cue from DOA for the style of that.

EDIT: hair is still WIP, strands overlap each other and shit.  Will be adding translucent hairs, just want the shadows from these broad sweeps.

Hey guys.

I'm trying to learn modeling. I wanna make models for an RTS, but I've discovered that I suck at modeling. I need help. Really, I need tutorials.

Check through the playlists here:

Failing that, look for some tutorials on Plane Modelling or Spline Modelling.
Also, remember that an easy way to give a flat surface another dimension is to use the extrude modifier.

Does anyone know how to prevent/fix the small vibrations you sometimes get when compiling shit for HL1?

Define Vibrations please.
unrelated -more work done, trying to find the right tone to the upper that gives it the right subtle contrast between the two types of metal. Obviously needs more work there, and on the lighting.... Also have to over some bits with a DETAIL brush.

Thanks man, though if you have any links (I remember seeing a P90 model tutorial around) to Plane modeling tutorials? Actually googling them leads to making actual airplane models, which is less than helpful.

No problem :)  This is head modelling, but it's still a pretty good plane modelling tutorial.

3DsMax Head Modeling Tutorial Plane Modeling

This one is also good
Low poly human modeling PART 1

It's pretty annoying that all the videos are starting to link to the Nintendo 3DS.  I love Nintendo but their product naming is absolutely crap.

Other stuff I've found, but not watched:
http://www.moddb.com/tutorials/beretta-9000-video-tutorial
http://www.republicofcode.com/tutorials/3ds/polymod_stealth/

Question for other Max users, does anyone know how to do stuff in Editable Poly mode and keep Mirrored Symmetry on at the same time?

@ DFC, not bad.  I'm not so sure that the detail props fit in, they seem to create a lot of contrast with the rest of the scene.

@ Toadie, you've really done a nice job fixing up the lighting on the reciever :)  Should be relatively easy to fix the rest of it up (which I hope will be soon ;D)

2 Dark 2 See.

Yeah it's really dark in the second section..part FRAPS's fault, partially the my own for choosing that map. The first section looks decent in 1080p though.

EDIT: Looking for some sex shotgun animations, not Dr. Z's or IIopn's M3 animations, neither of those look great on these hands. Trying to find shotgun animations for Blue Shift, sticking with Spork's hands. With some tweaks to assignments (and sometimes animations), they do the job just fine.
