Hahaha, I can agree on the face. It won't affect the controllers as long as you don't move the bones as far as I know, so it should be okay.

If You're worried, don't be.
I'm currently working on the strap and planning what to do with the face.
No pics today, though.

Just stick with the image Sporkeh got, I think it's the right way to go for the face.

So, I haven't even finished anything...  >:(

But, when I was wandering, while looking through various hgrunt models (I download every single one I find and take a look at it), I realised the OpFor MP soldier's [from Redux pack] helmet strap would suit my grunt! And yeah, I was right:
.
Yes; You've noticed - I haven't done nothing about the face - YET!

However, it's still NOT everything I plan to do about the strap - it also will go at the back of the neck; I found the right strap for it as well (also OpFor grunt!), but it doesn't quite match the one here. But sooner or later I should solve it as well.

Sometimes I wish I had 3DS Max :'( But - there's still free Blender - but I have no idea how to use it... :( Gotta learn! At least MilkShape was cheap (I payed for it with little help from parents)...

@Mafisha: I like your project and can't wait to see more...
But the strap you actually want to use, is the Barney helmet strap, and I think that wouldn't fit a military helmet that much.
Military helmet straps often have chin covers.

@Thomas: Yeah, I noticed the CoD4 helmet strap looks very close to the Barney helmet strap.
So it's a very good choice, Mafisha did. :)

I never liked the ski mask head on Romkas assassins.
But with the combat goggles, it would be a good replacement for the balaclava head of the HGrunts, I think.

Wow, guys, You made me blush... :>

Today I found an awesome HD model grunt WITH LONG SLEEVES! :neckbeard:
It was in this pack.
However, Richard [the author] included elbow-pads, which I don't like. I already decompiled the model and discovered that if You delete them You lose big chunk of arms... -.- Well, if I want to use them, apart from MASSES of crediting, I have to fix the missing faces...

To the strap, I still need to to the part going around the neck, so the soldiers can use ''Nape pads'' (I actually got the model of it done, which is on the head model, but so far it's floating in the air obviously). I found something matching my 'request' in yet another OpFor Redux soldier, but it doesn't quite match MP strap I showed You...

EDIT: This is the ''nape pad'' I mean:

Well, lot of work!
{Not forgetting about the face, but for it I'm currently out of ideas. But they'll come, sooner... or later.}

Romka's massn use the same skeleton, than the regular grunt, and they have long sleeves, use them rather than the one from richard's pack, it use the romka's source hgrunt that don't work very well with GldSrc animation system.
http://old.ambientimpact.com/files/models/Romka/massn_Romka.rar

Alternatively, use the source of a model I made from this post :

Hmmm... I'll try if You say so.
But I haven't even compiled that model once, so I'd better finish all 4 heads first. And I'm NOT that far from it. Thanks.

Sorry for double-posting, but it's DAYS after the last post, so it's rather acceptable.

Well, WELL! I'm nearly done with... ALL of the heads! The balaclava from Richard's grunt suits the soldiers beaut... I mean, 'handsomely' xD

I also changed how Submodel 4 will look like - instead of being similar to Submodel 3 but without a balaclava - he WILL actually have it, and also have a face-shield, what makes him look a bit like GIGN dude. :P

Well, no pics yet, but they will be here soon. Patience ;)

Sorry it took SO long; and I need to finish that strap! -.-  >:( :bang:

Bleh for a first attempt it's nice to see someone who actually put effort into doing something rather than releasing a fucking two second recolor done in paint

Innit :P I have nausea when I see some of them [sh*t reskins]... Goddammit, how can You use Paint? I can't use it anymore, the last time I touched it was when I was 7... xD And software like GIMP is a good rival to PhotoShop and it's free!! :D

Well, enough of chitchat. I've got an important announcement to make. It's a bit bad news, but...

In next 3 weeks I have series of important tests at school, and I won't be here nor have much time to work on meshes...  :( I've got to revise A LOT.
I'll be back of course! By the way, I'm nearly finished with ALL 4 heads! All I need to do is... yes, STRAP. But I found he right balaclava - Richard's grunt had it.

Thanks, Simon, Your advice was really valuable - those sleeves match the uniform exactly how it should be, but I struggle with texturing them... Well, I'll think of something.

The thing I also need to work on are GUNS - I haven't mentioned them yet. Which ones would You recommend? Should M16 have [unusable] Holographic sight? And SPAS12 - should it turn into a different shotgun [I know, no army in US uses it]?

Eh, if you're not a student getting it for free or working for moneys for an Adobe license, Gimp will do in a pinch.. it's better than Paint.NET for the most part.

Mini-Miracle! Today, at the morning [5:50 AM local time] I woke up and sneaked on the PC and... done the strap!!!

I feel like I'm ready to present the heads! :D :

Submodel 1 - Gasmask - with skeleton/bones:

Submodel 2 - Regular - the one You've seen unmasked:

Submodel 3 - Shotgunner - With the NVG/NODS:

Submodel 4 - Faceshield - Change of plans, face-shield seems to be better:

The only problem I have is the strap - the smoothing has gone wrong - and You see those 'black shadows'... How to get rid of it?? I tried to reverse vertex order twice, but nope. Any suggestions? :>

I'll try to be here as often as I can, but remember - gotta revise! I found out I've got SIX tests in 3 weeks. Seems easy but it isn't! xD

Submodel 1 - Gasmask - with skeleton/bones:

Smoothing looks a bit borked on that gasmask head. Tools > Make Smoothing Groups v4.09 > ctrl+m and you should be fine. That tool can be glitchy and not do anything, though.

By the way, you're going to use additive textures, I see. The hgrunt's reference SMDs must be ordered like this:

Code: [Select]
$body "body" "hgrunt_body"(this should contain the entire body, minus the heads. Just keep the majority of the grunt in one SMD if you need more than one SMD to accommodate the body. It's crucial that you only have one reference SMD before the heads and weapons groups.)

Code: [Select]
$bodygroup "heads"
{
studio "head1"
studio "head2"
studio "head3"
studio "head4"
}

Code: [Select]
$bodygroup "weapons"
{
studio "hgrunt_mp5"
studio "hgrunt_shotgun"
blank
}

$body "body" "hgrunt_body2"
$body "body" "hgrunt_body3"

For example, the body2 SMD contains a somewhat high poly weapon that sits in the holster on his pants. Body3 contains his watch.

If you have an additive texture that is present on all of the hgrunt head submodels, keep those in one SMD and put it at the end.
i.e.

Code: [Select]
$body "body" "additive"
Code: [Select]
$texturegroup skinfamilies
{
{ "skin1_wht.BMP" "skin2_wht.BMP" }
{ "skin1_blk.BMP" "skin2_blk.BMP" }
}

If you don't set it up like this, your gasmask head may have a black face, but white arms. Names don't matter, just retain this setup.

// Posting this to make sure you don't run into any flatshading issues - I ran into some that took me ages to fix.

Nope.

Brighten the textures and bump up the contrast, it'll be darkened in the engine.

Wow, thanks for feedback, thanks for tips!!! :D

I know stuff about skins and groups in .QC files because I have compiled before.
Luckily, there will be ONE body mesh. I'm still thinking on the sleeve texture...

I should be revising Graphics right now! heheheheheee... xD :eng101:  :words:

3 more tests - 2 next week and another later...

Well! Today there was Staff-training so no school - I used this time wisely...

Here comes the body! With details, and properly textured sleeves!:

Any additional modifications will be based on Your feedback.

How d'You like it? :)

Now only the guns. Time for suggestions, please.

EDIT: Ditto, but with hidden skeleton:

Hide the bones so we can actually see something.  :joebiden:

Try lowering the crotch and make the shoulders more round.

/e Also the NVGs won't properly fall over the eyes. Might need to be scaled up a bit.

I'll try - but it's likely it'll get distorted...

By the way, I have a little question to do with textures - e.g. say there's a hole in a model - and You created new faces to fix them. Yes... But when it's all textured, the bits You've just fixed are still black/or gray - the texture doesn't want to go on them - why?? How to fix that? That's what happened with my FIXED strap (yeah I fixed the 'black shades' but now I have THIS issue).
