I recently emailed a mod author about using some higher res HEV textures on his view models; he says that he has to keep the textures low to improve the the performance of the engine.

I know this is true with w_models, but do v_models lag the game as badly as w_models do? Does the size of the textures on the v_models even matter?

1-3 512x512 textures should be fine for a view model or NPC, but for anything else it would be excessive.

For world models (at least, w_ weapon models) you should only use 128x128 max and keep the poly count low.

After he releases the mod, he will also release the source code; I will change the hand textures myself, I guess. Thank you for the info Alex!
