In 3DS Max, I was taught to use the Select And Link tool in the upper left-hand corner to link the magazines, slides, etc. to a gun reference to provide easy mobility of the gun; I grab the gun and everything moves with it; I also do this with the hand rig to the gun. Problem is, because the hand rig reference SMDs I am provided do not have these links in them, and I have to separate my main reference mesh into other parts because my polycount is too high, I constantly get "illegal parent bone replacement" errors whenever I compile.

How should I go about fixing this? Is there another way to group objects together so they move in unison, yet move separately when I want them to?
