Saints Row IV (warning: may contain nerd rage) (and spoilers)
« on: August 23, 2013, 05:00:25 AM »
So I've been playing Saints Row IV recently.

And...

Jumping from rooftop to rooftop and sprinting up the side of buildings is *awesome*. And weapon customization. The first activities you're told to do are Insurance Fraud and Tank Mayhem, both of which are *awesome* now that you've got super powers. Uh. "What is Love". Telekinesis, fireballs. Dual Pistols remain "best gun ever".

And...

That's about it.

The story is.... disappointing. Most of the new, beloved Saints lieutenants you picked up in the previous game are nowhere to be found. Or get shitty deaths early in the game. (No names, but Hulk Hogan does not return. Or Sasha Grey. Or Eliza Dushku. Which is especially troubling, because the character she voiced *does* return. and her imitator is horrible and sound *whiny*) Uhm. Aliens. GUITAR CASE ROCKET LAUNCHERS. M41A PULSE RIFLES. (need to find/make a mod that replaces the shoot sound with something better. You know. That sounds like a M41A pulse rifle.) "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith. (It's like the emo shit you hear on the radio, but older.)

It's much less serious than SR2 and marginally less serious than SRTT was - if you're one of the "SR2 was best game" fanboy/girls, you'll probably hate SR4. ( I am, un/fortunately, one of those. So I'm a tad upset when Fun Shaundi returns and rather than sounding like the chill, laid back stoner chick, like she was in SR2 she sounds like a whiny teenager).

Discuss. Thoughts? Arguments for X character not returning? Head canon?

My personal head canon for Zimos not returning, is he died of a heart attack in the midst of an orgy like a true badass during the Boss's presidential campaign. He death caused a bit of a scandal because orgy/sex/stuff, and the Boss resolved it with a moment of inspiration by promising to force the STAG Initiative through Congress - Free porn for everyone!

Yeah but HOW IS THE GAME pal?

I didn't play SR for the story (honestly I thought that aspect was completely awful and unfunny), I played it for the fun missions that brought back that classic GTA gameplay and refined it.

Yeah, it might help if you read the whole post you respond to.

I really haven't gotten that far, maybe 1/3 through? I try to play a mission and what i'm doing just makes me cringe so hard. The Boss and Pierce are cruising around Virtual Steelport and they start singing. And it's.. so bad. Especially when I remember the first time they did that, which was so incredibly *awesome* it made that entire mission one of my favorites in SR3. The game in general.. I think I'm probably getting frustrated because I'm playing it like a regular human instead of SUPERMAN IN PURPLE. I hit sprint to do the boduken/AWESOME vehicle entry and 3/4 of the times I'll instead hit super sprint and flip the friggin car rather than diving in through the window.

The Earth explodes. Oleg and Birk die. And they don't get the amazingly emotional and motivational deaths like Carlos and Aisha got in SR2.

If you liked SR3 because it was so whacky and lulzy (LOL I CAN KILL PEOPLE WITH A BIG FLOPPY DILDO LOL) you'll probably love SR4 - shit gets bigger, badder and more insanely absurd.

e: OH, yeah. Greer triggered the line of thought for this - the first mission is a pretty blatant rip of MoH Warfighter (which I have not played yet.) This is a recurring theme in the story missions. The next mission feels ripped from DNF, etc etc.
