[HL1] The Core mod seeking help
« on: January 18, 2014, 02:22:13 PM »
Hi Guys. It's been a while since I dropped by here.

You may or may not have heard of a little mod called The Core which I am developing along with 2 other guys? I was looking to put in a request for a new model to replace the temporary one we are using for a new enemy. The alien commander is to be a clone of the alien grunt with a little bit of coding to mix things up. We're fine for all that, but the team doesn't have a proper modeller.

Without any real design concept, basically we need a slightly larger version of the agrunt model covered in armour plating from head to toe. Maybe with some kind of transparent visor or head mounted laser for spotting tasty humans without exposing their eyes to bullets. If you need any more information I'll be glad to provide and any contributors will be fully credited of course.

All the best,
Urby

Yes, I agree with Sporkeh. It's a bit hard to make something, with only that text description above.

Yeah, understandable. Leave it with me and I'll post some artwork later today. Cheers guys.  :)

EDIT: see below (based on A.I's alien grunt model which we are using in the mod.

Note: I'm happy enough with the chrome textures in but we are attempting to phase them out. It's already been done in a few simple cases such as barneys helmet and so on, but the alien grunt is far beyond my UV mapping ability. If anyone is able to UV map his armour, and indeed the alien commander's armour, I would be eternally grateful. However, it's really not that important if it's over complicated to do.

If someone models on the armour I might be able to map them.

When i think xen i think organic. Slapping metal plates on it, contoured to its body makes em look like a cyborg, which is weird to me. Id go more "predator" and make it try to look "tribal". Can use the armor to break up the silhouette morr as well. From a distance it would probably look the same as the regular version, with different colors.

Well, I don't have a link to hand but I do believe Marc Laidlaw once stated that the armour plating on the alien grunts was a sort of natural chitinous exoskeleton, like on the garg. I would love to take that angle but the gear on the HD and SD varients of the grunt look more like metallic armour plating.

Again, this comes down to my lack of modelling / UV knowledge, otherwise I would definitely take that approach. :)

Wow, thank you very much, that helped a lot!
Hm, there is a uv_mapped armor Alien grunt model, by trusty crowbar. (I think.)
Ans I know there's an Alien Grunt with more armor modelled onto.

I uploaded both here:

Edit: Okay, I now also uploaded an older Version of the trusty crowbar agrunt,
with an interesting texture, and the old 0.52 agrunt that had some interesting textures too.

They're pretty cool but a little uhm... BMS-ey? :P

I'm actually considering what Sporkeh said and taking the tribal route. I might just be able to handle that on my own but I'll see how it goes and come back to you.

Thanks all for the input. :D

I think the armour on the Alien grunt was supposed to be from the combine after they invaded Xen and took control there? That's why the BMS grunt had such a look to it.
