How to make your map more awesome
« on: December 22, 2008, 02:54:49 PM »

While my map is compiling I though that I could write some tips for mapping in RAR.

Do not stop the movement of player:

 - No deadends
Deadends forces player to stop and turn around. Why they drive circle laps with cars?
Just driving foward and bacward is boring and so is running too. Deadends also increases
amout of camping in map.

 - Minium possible amount of ducking.
Ducking is slow, boring and makes player very easy target for enemies.

 - Elevators
If you use elevators make them move when player is inside them and be sure
that nothing can block them. You really need elevators only to go up
because there are no falling damage so make elevators go back down once they have went up.

 - Do not add too much stuff
Obstacles like crates, collapsed walls and cars are good but don't overuse them.

Lights are fun

 - Darkness
Dark map is no fun. Playres usually like to see what they are shooting.
Dark areas can be used for hiding and couple of dark shadows give good contrast.
But nothing is pitch black. Dim light are better than no lights.

 - Flashlight
Players have flashlight but it doesn't really light up a large area and is pretty useless.

Lovely layout

 - Draw it
Never start mapping without having a clear image in your mind what you are doing.
It saves a lot of time.

 - x- and y-factor
Straight line is a boring as watching map compiling.
Make routes around the map everywhere
where you can make them without making it a cheese. Hmm... A cheese.
Cheese is a great example of map that have routes everywhere!

 - Do not make it too complex
Doors, small sniping holes, extremely detailed areas etc.distract player from
the main point of the game.

 - Theme
Select a theme. For example a ship. Remember the them while you are mapping and
map won't have much random factor (you can also select random as a theme... but that is just retarded).

 - Playtesting
While you are drawing a layout try to imagine how it will play. Then playtest map and if the
playing the map isn't what you want change the layout. Its good to ask othter people
what they would add/delete from map too.

More to come when I am having another "long" compile!

Edit1: Added layout tips.

I personally do not like to use elevators in my maps. They are a bit laggy, and generally slow the game down. If I needed something to move players upwards, I would prefer to use something like a gravity lift or a teleporter than a elevator.

Thats good point! If you use gravity lift you cant go down from same route, but teleports works well
as far as players know where the teleport goes (diffrent colors for diffrent teleports).

I made an elevator for my map because teleports or gravity lifts didn't fit the theme.
