reduce texture sizes
« on: July 26, 2009, 09:10:05 PM »
hello there...

looking for high fps weapon models i found a pack form the csru team light edition, his features are:

Deleted non viewable faces,
Lowered texture size (256*256 instead of 512*512).

There is some visual difference between both packs, however the light edition will satisfy more than 70% of all users."

my questions are:

1 how they did the "Lowered texture size (256*256 instead of 512*512)"?

2 can i do it too?

3 if i can, please give me a tutorial for do it and the tools necesary for make it possible

i will be aprecciated for your support and waiting for your response.

notes: there's one example what i'm talking about atached

my english is not very fluid...

You can resize textures with pretty much every image-editing application (ie. Irfanview).

Global overview:

  • Create a new folder somewhere
  • Put the mdl file in there you want to edit
  • Decompile the model by dragging the file into the decompiling app (mdldec - extract it to the same folder) link
  • You can now open and resize the textures using an image-editor, I use Irfanview which is free. Open the image in Irfanview, press ctrl+r and change the dimensions to 256x256. The textures need to be 8-bit (256 colours) - go to Image > Decrease colour depth and select "256 colours" - make sure that Floyd-Steinberg dithering is checked.
  • Save and overwrite the original textures
  • Extract studiomdl to the same folder, and drag the qc file into this application, which will generate a new mdl file

You should note that resizing textures usually does not significantly improve performance in Counter-Strike, unless you have a very old computer.
